Charles Miller is a British fine art photographer living and working in France and Spain. He has a particular interest in floral and portrait photography, revisiting the 17th century Dutch floral still life and portrait paintings with their fanatical focus on composition and detail and the play of light and shadow.
For his floral work, Charles explores this approach by growing most of the flowers and creating the backgrounds and props himself. The final image, composed of flowers not usually in bloom at the same time dotted with insects and other items not native to each other, is the result of digitally compositing hundreds of individual photos with the shadows and highlights added as needed. These “impossible” compositions construct a visual feast that hark back to the golden age of Dutch still life painting, where it always spring or summer and where beauty and meaning are found everywhere and in everything.

Pour son travail floral, Charles explore cette approche en cultivant la plupart des fleurs et en créant lui-même les arrière-plans et les accessoires. L'image finale, composée de fleurs qui ne fleurissent généralement pas au même moment et qui sont parsemées d'insectes et d'autres éléments non indigènes les uns aux autres, est le résultat de la composition numérique de centaines de photos individuelles, les ombres et les lumières étant ajoutées selon les besoins. Ces compositions "impossibles" constituent un festin visuel qui rappelle l'âge d'or de la peinture hollandaise de natures mortes, où il fait toujours printemps ou été et où la beauté et le sens se trouvent partout et dans tout.
